일본 단색화의 대가 마사히코 츠보타(坪田政彦)의 전시가 대구에서 최초로 열린다. 1947년 일본 히메지에서 출생한 츠보타는 1970년대부터 50여 년간 독자적인 추상화법을 선보이며 작업에 매진하다 2023년에 작고했다. 그는 오사카 예술대 교수로도 재직하면서 미국과 유럽 등지에서 활발하게 활동해왔다.

그의 작품은 화면을 성립시키는 요소도, 그 기법도 간결하고 미니멀하다. 그러나, 그 과정에는 깊은 사색과 고유의 감각이 깃들어 있다. 멀리 떨어져 보면 흰색 일변도로 보이지만 가만히 들여다보면 미묘하게 물결치는 무수한 규칙적인 선들이 드러나며 또 다른 세계로 이끌리듯 무한히 빠져들게 된다. 빛을 받은 복잡한 음영의 섬세함은 말할 필요도 없다.

고요함 속에 그가 말없이 수행하듯 새긴 시간의 집적이 강렬하게 존재한다. 이런 시각적 요소들로 이루어진 그의 작품 속에는 삶에 대한 존재론적 성찰과 철학적 사유가 깊이 스며들어 있다. 그러므로 그의 작품들은 보는 이로 하여금 고요하고도 깊은 명상에 빠져들게 한다.
 

A solo exhibition by Masahiko Tsubota, a master of Japanese monochrome painting, will be held in Daegu for the first time. Born in Himeji, Japan in 1947, Tsubota devoted himself to his work, demonstrating his own abstract painting style for 50 years starting in the 1970s, and passed away in 2023. Worked in the US and Europe.

In his work, both the elements that form the screen and the techniques are simple and minimal. However, the process is steeped in deep thought and unique sensibility. From a distance, it appears to be all white, but if you look closely, countless subtly wavy, regular lines are revealed, and you are drawn into another world infinitely. There is no need to mention the delicacy of the complex shades illuminated by light.

In the silence, the accumulation of time engraved as he silently performs exists intensely. His works, comprised of these visual elements, are deeply imbued with ontological reflection and philosophical thinking about life. Therefore, his works allow the viewer to fall into quiet and deep meditation.

This exhibition, the first to be held in Daegu, will showcase approximately 50 of Tsubota's representative paintings and minimalist sculptures from the 1980s to recent works on the two floors of the gallery's A and B halls.
