Artist Kim Do-yeon, who is holding his first solo exhibition in Daegu, was born and raised in Icheon, a town of pottery. Since childhood, the element 'soil' has been the artist's natural growth environment and a tool to express himself. This exhibition presents ceramic plate works that were refined with numerous hands over a long period of time using materials that are inseparable from the artist's life. After drawing on a ceramic plate baked using the artist's own method, an inlay technique is applied to create a unique, raw texture. He works hard and for long periods of time, such as making ceramic plates and drawing pictures.
 
For me, work is the act of creating a language or explanatory tool to express myself. Through this exhibition, I wanted to tell the story of how one human being lived this way. Born in a pottery village, clay was a natural material for me. I can't definitively express my feelings with one word, but the texture of the soil is the best means of language and tool to talk about my inner thoughts. Everyone would imagine a free life. I wanted to say that this is not me hiding behind difficult or plausible words, but that this is me.

대구에서 첫 개인전을 여는 김도연 작가는 도자기의 마을 이천에서 태어나 자랐다. 어린시절부터 '흙'이라는 요소는 작가의 자연스러운 성장환경이자 자신을 나타내는 도구였다. 이번 전시는 작가의 삶과 떼어낼 수 없는 재료를 오랜시간 수 많은 손길로 다듬어 낸 도판작업 등을 선보인다. 작가만의 비법으로 구워낸 도판위에 드로잉한 후 상감기법을 응용해 날것 같은 독특한 질감을 연출해 낸다. 도판을 만들고 그림을 그리는 등 긴 시간 정성을 쏟으며 작업한다.
 

나에게 있어서 작업이란, 내 자신을 보여주는 언어나 설명 도구를 만드는 행위이다.

이번 전시를 통해 하나의 인간이 이렇게 살아왔다고 이야기를 하고 싶었다. 도자기 마을에서 태어난 나는 흙이라는 재료가 자연스러운 물질이었다. 하나의 단어로 내 감정을 단정 지울 순 없지만, 흙의 질감은 내 속내를 이야기하기엔 최고의 언어 수단이자 도구이다. 누구나 자유로운 삶을 상상할 것이다. 어려운 단어나 그럴싸한 단어 뒤에 숨어 있는 내가 아니라 이 자체가 나라고 이야기하고 싶었다.
